Dr. Khalida Jabeen is an Assistant Researcher (Marine Biology, Department of Marine Science) at the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, East China Normal University, Shanghai as well as at the Hainan Research Institute of East China Normal University, Sanya, Hainan Island. She is a member of the Institute of Plastic Cycle and Innovation (Plastic Marine Debris Research Center), and the UNESCO-IOC Regional Training and Research Center on Plastic Marine Debris and Microplastics. She is an active participant in the UN Ocean Decade Project (UN22): “Stem the Tide of Asia’s Riverine Plastic Emission into the Ocean” by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the Decade Plan of Action for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, and also Team Leader of the task force on developing harmonized and co-design methodologies under the UNESCO-IOC for the Western Pacific Countries (WESTPAC). Dr. Khalida is among the pioneers of microplastic research and has been a group member who initiated microplastic research in China. Since 2014, she has been engaged in working on plastic pollution in marine and freshwater (biotic and abiotic compartments) environments, and the toxicological effects, risk assessment, fate, and flux of plastic and microplastics have been the primary focus of her research. Seeking scientific-based solutions and adopting sustainable strategies to address environmental problems in response to human interventions is also a great concern for her.
